For what it's worth I taught my girls when they were younger to never refer to someone as their "best friend". Saves a lot of heartache because most close friendships will wax and wane and some people are not suited to one closest friend. Also someone else is bound to be excluded. Instead we refer to our closest friends as just that, one of our closest friends.
